Charlottetown June, 2010
June 3, 2010

On the weekend of May 29-30, local up-and-coming athletes from around the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island area came out to compete in the first of five Rogers Rookie Tour events to be hosted provincially this year. The 16 and under athletes really seemed to enjoy themselves, as the sun was beaming, and the competition was friendly. For most of the athletes, this tournament represented a huge milestone as their first organized event.

The Victoria Park tennis courts, host of the 2009 Summer Canada Games, were the place to be that weekend. The courts were in full usage, as was the barbecue. The athletes were pleasantly surprised with a Rogers gift bag at the tournament desk, filled with water bottles, t-shirts and other goodies. Each player had had a minimum of three matches in the compass tournament that was held Sunday, divided into multiple divisions. Local volunteers were on site to make sure that the rookies could be confident that they were playing the game properly, and could focus solely on playing, as well as operating the barbecue.

During the final matchup, the parents and children alike watched intently as the two newly minted tennis players jockeyed for the championship title. At the end of the day though, all were content and the little red army of Rogers shirts trudged happily homeward.
