COACHING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL

After completing the Club Professional 2 course, coaches have the option to pursue the performance coaching route and dive into the development stages of competitive players. If you are interested in becoming a coach at the provincial, national or international level, these courses will enable you to nurture players along their development pathway.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This development coaching course is suitable for coaches who demonstrate the highest qualities of integrity, dedication, commitment, and skill towards working with provincial and national competitive players. Candidates must be working year-round with provincial-level competitive players.

The Coach 2 course (NCCP Context: Introduction to Competition Advanced) is the first level of the Tennis Canada’s “Competition Stream – Performance Coaching” certification stream, focusing on the WPDP Stage 2 “FUNdamentals” and Stage 3 “Development”.

The major focus of the Coach 2 course is to ensure that the coach has the competencies to develop a strong global foundation (technical, tactical, physical and psychological fundamentals) in order to maximize the player’s development and transition to the next level without limitation. The priority is to develop competitive players while increasing the pool of U12 players in Canada with international profiles. The coach will be capable of creating a consistent high-performance environment while possessing the attention to detail that goes into managing a player and the relentlessness required to develop great habits. In addition, coaches will be competent in addressing the needs of top provincial/national competitive adult players in the club environment.

Coaches completing the Coach 2 course can aspire to work in an academy or Junior Development Program, become a head coach for a U12 Program (red court, orange court, green court or full court regular ball), or a personal coach for top provincial competitive players.

Coach 2 candidates will gain knowledge and competencies in the following areas:

Creating a safe tennis environment
Making ethical decisions
Providing support to athletes in training
Planning a practice
Supporting the competitive experience
Analyzing performance
Designing a sport program
Managing a program
Tennis specific outcomes

Minimum certification requirement: Club Professional 2 or recognition of coaching competence
Minimum age: 21 years old
Minimum level of play: 5.5
Coaches must be able to feed at an advanced level and demonstrate advanced skills as required in order to work with a national junior player.
Be an Active TPA member
Coaches must have two U12 competitive players (provincially ranked) that they work with primarily for the duration of the course. You are ultimately responsible for their overall development and coach both on a weekly basis (i.e., in group and private training; support in competitive environments). These players will be used for your portfolio assignments.
If not yet completed, coaches must fill out the NCCP Make Ethical Decision online evaluation prior to the first regrouping of the course.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This performance coaching course is suitable for coaches who demonstrate the highest qualities of teamwork, passion, integrity, innovation, excellent and accountability, currently working with players competing at the national and early stages of the international circuit.

Coaches completing the Coach 3 course are equipped to coach at an Academy or in a junior development program, hold a leadership position in an Academy, become a personal and travelling coach for national or international competitions, a provincial coach at Nationals or the Canada Games.

The Coach 3 course (NCCP Context: Competition Development) is the third level of the Tennis Canada’s “Competition Stream – Performance Coaching” certification stream, focusing on the LTAD Stage 4 “Consolidating”.

The major focus of Coach 3 is to ensure that the coach has the on-court competencies (tactical, technical, physical, and psychological), and off-court leadership skills to lead a program, team, or player, helping the player developing the skills required to compete at the international level. The priority is to develop competitive players while increasing the “pipeline” of players in Canada with international standards. The coach will be capable of creating a culture of excellence while possessing the attention to detail, maintaining great habits, and pushing the player’s limit to consolidate the player’s identity. The coach will develop a stronger sense of ownership over their own mission, vision, and values.

Coach 3 candidates will gain knowledge and competencies in the following areas:

Ethical coaching and safeguarding
Coaching the player in practice, developing an attitude of excellence
Periodization planning according to athlete's LTAD stage
Creating player priorities according to an international competencies evaluation
Coaching at Competition
Manage a Program
Problem Solving
Leadership Skills

Minimum certification requirement: Coach 2 or recognition of coaching competence. *Note: If new to Canada, a coach must provide proof of equivalent certification from an ITF-recognized tennis federation for acceptance by Tennis Canada and have worked for a minimum of 2 years with performance athletes at the appropriate WPDP stage.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This advanced performance coaching course is suitable for committed and engaged coaches who have a track record of working with Top 100 players on the international junior circuit and/or players on the ITF World Tennis Tour. Candidates must be working year-round with top national players and ideally, players competing internationally on the ITF Junior or Pro circuits.

The Coach 4 course falls under the Competition Development Advanced Gradation of the NCCP program.

The purpose of this course is to ensure that the coach has the most updated knowledge and the ability to develop the proper international competencies (tactical, technical, physical and psychological) for players and to progress them through the performance stage and transition to pro tennis stage, allowing them to be on track for the life as a pro stage.

Coaches completing the Coach 4 course are qualified for a leadership position in a Club or academy, to become a coach travelling with players at the international level as well as a national coach.

The Coach 4 curriculum is centred around the following modules:

Advance Coaching Diploma Modules delivered by the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI)
- Coaching Leadership
- Performance planning
Tennis Specific Modules delivered by Tennis Canada
- Coaching effectiveness
- Training and competition readiness

Minimum certification requirement: Coach 3
Minimum age: 25 years old
Registered in the Advanced Coaching Diploma offered by the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI).
Past or present work with players taking part in international competition and preferably ranked on the ITF circuit.
Minimum level of play: 5.0 and able to demonstrate advanced skills as required in order to work with a top national or international calibre player at the Performance stage (ideally age 15+ international standard).
Coaches must have access to ONE player at the Performance stage or Transition to Pro Tennis stage who they work with primarily for the duration of the course. This player will be used for your portfolio assignments.
Be an active member of the Tennis Professionals Association (TPA).
If not yet completed, coaches must complete 1 MED (Making Ethical Decision) online evaluation prior to the first regrouping.
Provide a copy of a Vulnerable Sector Screening check done at your local police station prior to starting the course. Note that active TPA members get an annual background check.
