Rating & ranking systems

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RANKING AND A RATING?

RANKING

A ranking is based on the results that a player achieves in tournaments within a given time frame (typically a rolling 52-week period). The focus is on how far the player goes within the tournament and the level of the tournament. Players only receive points if they win a match and go on to the next round. Furthermore, only the outcome of the match matters and not how close the match was. A ranking is the comparative position of a player within a particular category of players, for example girls under 12.

RATING

A rating is based on who a player competes against and the outcome of the match. Each set won in the match counts towards a player’s rating (even if they lose the match). Ratings use the same scale for all players regardless of gender, age or ability. A rating identifies the level of a player. An example would be the ITF World Tennis Number, which rates players on a scale from 40 (beginner) to 1 (elite professional).

TO COMPARE

While rankings position players relative to others based on tournament outcomes, ratings provide an individualized assessment of a player's skill level, considering the nuances of match performance.

How the Rankings Work

The ranking system primarily relies on the number of tournaments a player participates in and their respective results. Simply put, rankings reward players for their performances and consistent participation in tournaments. This encourages athletes to compete frequently and excel, fostering a competitive environment that helps develop their skills.

Ratings

Understanding Ratings

A tennis rating assesses a player's technical abilities, including ground strokes, return of serve, net play, and serving skills. This comprehensive approach allows players to gauge their strengths and areas for improvement. Here's why it's important to establish your rating.

Purpose of Establishing Your Rating

  • Discover Your General Level: Helps players assess their overall tennis proficiency.
  • Find Comparable Opponents: Facilitates connections with players of similar skill levels for balanced and competitive games.
  • Play with Handicap Scoring: Provides opportunities to compete with higher-level players using handicap scoring for a more balanced match.
  • Join Group Lessons and Leagues: Enables participation in programs tailored to specific skill levels.
