The tournament will follow a team format with an elimination draw. Teams will play three doubles matches (worth a total of one point) followed by six singles matches (six points). A fixture is won by the first team to reach four points.
The women’s bracket has Laval’s Rouge et Or taking on Toronto’s Varsity Blues, and Alberta’s Pandas taking on the Dalhousie Tigers. Matches will begin on Friday.
The men’s draw will kick off on Saturday with the University of British Columbia taking on the University of Toronto and Laval taking on Dalhousie.
The winners of each matchup will face off to be crowned University Champions on Sunday, Aug. 11. A third-place playoff will also take place on Sunday.
Last year, the University of Alberta’s women’s team and Université de Montréal’s men’s team were crowned champions. The Alberta women’s team will have the opportunity to defend their title and claim the Canadian University Championships for a fifth straight time.
This will be the first time the University Championships will be hosted under both the Tennis Canada and U SPORTS banners as the two organizations have collaborated to make tennis the first Pilot Sport in program history.
As a Pilot Sport, tennis will be part of the Partnership Sports category of U SPORTS’ new sport model program. Under the Partnership Sports umbrella, events are primarily funded by the appropriate National Sports Organization and operated in partnership with U SPORTS.
