Denis Shapovalov was beaten in four sets on Thursday by California’s Brandon Nakashima in the second round of Wimbledon.
This week hasn’t been easy for the Canadian Tennis star. On Tuesday, Shapovalov snapped a six-game skid against Arthur Rinderknech, his first since his win against Nadal in May.
It wasn’t looking good early on in the match, losing 6-2 in the opening set. Shapovalov bounced back in the second and had seemed to find his stride but gave up eight double faults, and eventually, Nakashima regained his composure to secure a four-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6).
Nakashima is currently ranked 56th and will be advancing to the third round for the second time this year, having been his best match result since this year’s French Open.
Shapovalov is the second Canadian to be eliminated in the second round of Wimbledon this year, along with Bianca Andreescu, who lost today against Elena Rybakina 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski will be playing in the second-round doubles tomorrow, the only Canadian left at this year’s tournament.
